-What motivates you to learn?
I’m motivated to learn when I am being taught something of interest to me or to be honest something I feel will benefit me. That sounds a bit rude; rather I tune in more when I find something interesting or beneficial. I’m a keen listener and feel knowledge is power so I’m always interested, especially when it comes to facts. For me it is very black and white and in our own understanding we can come up with shades of grey!
-How do you learn?
I find I need cold hard facts that I then digest and relay to myself in different ways so I know I have understood every aspect of it. I would also jot down notes and see if I can remember the notes written down and why I made those notes.. if not, I’m in trouble. :)
-How do you know you understand something?
If I can re-talk myself through the work and understand it. If I can explain it to someone who has little to now understanding of the topic ,and leave them with an understanding.
INFECTING THE CITY
At first I was a little confused by the art work presented at infecting the city on Thursday 24th of February. I would just see mounds of rubbish and few shack like structures around, until I actually went up to the displays and read the orange board next to it, it was only then my eyes had been opened. Initially was caught off guard at the rawness of some of the artist statements. From then on reading the board came second to all the questions I had to answer in my head first. I feel we got there a little early in the day- the music was infectious but when I drove past later on Friday afternoon there seemed to be a lot more activity and involvement in the art portrayed. There were people posing as lifeguard on the container roof and another under an umbrella on the ground. I must say it has opened my eyes to the meaning of art and what can be classified as art, in a sense that everyone has their own interpretation on the art presented no matter how subtle or bold. We all feel a certain way when we look at art, from structures, to paintings, to photography and jewelley. All that is needed is the initial spark it gives us to the wondering questions and thoughts we are left with long after.
I love photography so I would contribute by making jewellery out of items many people would throw away and at my stand you would be able to adorn yourself in these unique jewels and pose for a photo, you would then move along to my massive wire ring structure where you could place your photo and fasten on any material you think would be suitable for either the shank or stone, by the end of the week there would be a mammoth ring filled with so many people contributions as it comes alive before your eyes you can stand there for hours marvelling over its detail and thought.
